Doon Doggies ready for action

Numbers retained in senior team and extra players gained as the Dogs have a crack in the OKFNL

BONNIE Doon Dogs are raring to go and to kick start their season will play intra-club matches at home this Saturday.

According to new seniors’ coach Tony Cooksey the seniors side is made up of almost all last year’s players, plus some more.

"The team remains pretty much the same as last year with an added eight more players to choose from," Cooksey said.

Joining the Ovens and King Football Netball League (OKFNL) this year the club promised to field an additional under 18s side.

"The under 18s are looking good with about 20 players signed up so far, some top players in among those, and we expect more to come in now that school has settled back into the year," Cooksey said.

"Some of these are younger - and there are six or seven better players - who may even get a game in the seniors this year.

"And the reserves are going well and have plenty of depth and good numbers."

The first round match for the season will be played against old rivals Goorambat at Bonnie Doon on Easter Sunday.

On March 20 a round robin will be played against three other Ovens and King sides - All Blacks, Swanpool and Millawa (2009 premiers).

Being played at Wangaratta, each team has been guaranteed at least three games comprising of two by 15-minute halves.

"The aim this year is basically to be competitive and for players not to get ahead of themselves," Cooksey said.

"They (the Doggies) have had a pretty good run over the last couple of years and with a new league may be in for a shock.

"The Doggies are a pretty good side still, but haven’t really been tested over the last couple of years.

"This year games will be more competitive."
