Capella Singers warm up their vocal cords for 21st birthday party

THE SOPRANOS: Hitting the higher notes for the Capella Singers are (from left) Jenny Parsons, Pat Webb, Julia Arnold and Leanne Robson.

FOR a group that originally started singing at a Medieval evening as a fundraiser for Mansfield Musical and Dramatic Society (MMuDS), it’s a fairly good effort to see them still together 21 years on.

After enjoying their first recital, members decided to keep the Cappella group going.

For those who are not aware of where the name comes from, Cappella is the term used for performing without accompaniment.

"We’ve met basically each Tuesday over the 21 years at our home," soprano Jenny Parsons said.

"And even during our house moves from View Street to Victoria Street and now Somerset Crescent, we have continued to gather, practice and extend our repertoire and voices."

The main core group is made up of the two Davids - Parsons and Robson - Daryl Hunt, Pat Webb, Kay Harris, Leanne Robson and Jenny Parsons.

"We’ve had several tenors through - Simon Ritchie, Matthew Reynolds and currently Russell Purdey," Mrs Parsons said.

"Altos have been Rosemary Thompson and now Monica Sketcher and sopranos have been Eduarda van Klinken, RowenaChristiansen and now Grace Beer.

"Basses have remained our ‘base’ - Daryl and David.

"For the milestone celebrations the group will dine out at one of Mansfield’s venues - and possibly have a sing while we’re out," Mrs Parsons said.

"We’re also looking at doing a Choral Evensong, a concert here in Mansfield, and having a display at the Mansfield Library - where we have sung for two Christmas in Julys.

"And we would love to sing at the Wangaratta Cathedral but we are still working on that."
