Closure is ‘painful’

Mt Buffalo Chalet problems continue to plague community

LACK of communication on the closure of Mt Buffalo Chalet continues to cause frustration within the community and the situation is getting painful, according to Alpine Regional Tourism Board’s Andrew Wilson.

Following the fencing off of the chalet in September, lessee Burbank Group’s Bill Armistead said negotiations were progressing slowly.

"We’re currently still trying to get a meeting with Parks Victoria," he said.

"As yet we haven’t had the opportunity to meet so there has been no further developments."

Mr Armistead said that in December, Parks Victoria wrote a letter calling on the chalet to be open by December 14.

"It’s just not possible because of the state of the building," he said.

"We’re waiting on Parks Victoria.

"Obviously we’re frustrated and there’s no doubt the public is as well."

Cr Daryl Pearce said he had had regular meetings with the Burbank group in an effort to keep the community informed.

"The fact is Burbank still require a 99 year lease if they are going to have a viable business," he said.

"There’s no denying it’s a big issue for the community and it’s imperative for tourism within the shire."

Mr Wilson said the situation was painful and frustrating for the community.

"Burbank says they’re chasing Parks Victoria, Parks Victoria claims to be chasing Burbank but no one is catching up with each other," he said.

"The community continues to lose out each day.

"We’re fed up with it.

"We, the community, believe we are being totally ignored."

Bill Sykes (MLA, Benalla) echoed Mr Wilson’s concerns and said the indecision was killing the community.

"It’s time the State Government told us what the heck is going on," he said.
